Genealogy programme for Apple Mac Computer
« on: Sunday 15 November 09 09:33 GMT (UK) »
I have a new apple mac computer and would like to find out the best software to use for genealogy purposes.
I currently use FTM on my PC.
Would it just be a matter of transferring my data via gedcoms or is their software specifically for the MAC?
Your thoughts and ideas appreciated.

There are several FT programs for the Macintosh, the only one I have experience of is Heredis which I used on my Windows PC until they switched exclusively to the Mac. It was very good and easy to use, but they stopped supporting/updating the PC version so I now use RootsMagic.

I don't think there is a version of FTM for the Mac, but whatever program you get should happily import GEDCOMs created on your PC

Hi,
I've been using MacFamily tree for a year or so.  Its fine and you can import GEDCOMs from any source as well.  You buy it online and they send you an access key to download it.  I think you can get it from the Apple store.

I would say its not as good as some of the PC software but it may be the best of the bunch.

Hi again,

This thread has a lot of info on Mac software and comes quite up to date. A program called Reunion seems to be popular.

Hi, We gave Reunion to a godson  as a gift and he has been delighted with it, and he's very computer savy so I'd take that as a recommendation.

Another option is to get a programme that allows you to run windows based software on a Mac, like Bootcamp or Parallels. You could run FTM then without having to change anything.

Good luck with the Mac, been thing of changing for ages now, haven't quite got the courage to do it yet!  :)
