Theatre of war
« on: Monday 16 November 09 16:55 GMT (UK) »
I've just looked up a couple of my relatives on  the Soldiers Died in the Great War database on Ancestry. For both of them, it says the theatre of war was Aldershot. One relative "died of wounds" in April 1916 and the other was "killed in action" in August 1918. Surely he wouldn't have been killed in action in Aldershot ???

Can anyone enlighten me?

Hi,

If you search for them on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site you should find some more accurate information.

Thanks nanny jan. I'd already found them on GWGC and was hoping to glean more info from Ancestry. I was just curious as to why it said Aldershot when they both died in France.

Many thanks anyway.

This is the subject of many complaints made to Ancestry about their transcription, with no result so far.  Most of those Aldershot  entries should be 'France and Flanders'.
[Enough comments about present-day dangers of Aldershot on Friday/Saturday nights have already been made.]
