Mint Lane, Lincoln. COMPLETED many thanks
« on: Friday 20 November 09 13:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know where I can find out the history of Mint Lane, I'm interested in 1861-1872 specifically.  I've googled, Asked Jeeves etc. but can't find anything useful.

My 2 x g.grandfather was at 11 Mint Lane on the 1861 census with his 2nd wife and their 4 children (his children from his first marriage, inc. my g.grandfather had moved on).  He was still at 11 Miint Lane on the 1871 census with his 2nd wife and their two youngest children,  his occupation at the time of both census was poulterer.

[Also living there was an old widow, who was listed as mother.  I don't know whose mother she was, as she wasn't my 2 x g.grandfather's mother, (who died in 1844) nor was she the mother of his 2nd wife - or indeed his first wife and on the 1851 census she is shown as a Farmer's wife - still I can ignore her].

When we visited Lincolnshire as part of our holiday in 2008, walking in my ancestors footsteps, we went to Gaunt Street and took photographs of number 30, but having got in a traffic jam in Lincoln in the rush hour, we only saw the end of Mint Lane but couldn't stop so I don't know what it's like now.

Now the mystery.  When 2 x g.grandfather died of asthma in 1872 at 11 Mint Lane, the informant not surprisingly was his 2nd wife, but the address she gave was the address of my 2 x g.grandfather's eldest son who was a blacksmith.  I just wondered if my 2 x g.grandfather was carrying on his work at 11 Mint Lane, but living with his eldest son and family at 30 Gaunt Street.  Does anyone know if Mint Lane was becoming uninhabitable in 1872.  I could imagine it wasn't a very good trade for someone suffering with asthma.

Does anyone know where I can find old photographs of Mint Lane, by the way there aren't any on the Frith site.

Many thanks
Lizzie

Who did he marry in 1848?

I keep seeing her birthplace as Alderkirk(e) ... this was surely Algarkirk which is the next village to Kirton, birthplace of Charlotte ATKIN.

Thomas ATKIN was married to Prudence in 1841 - she died in 1850, then he was with Charlotte in 1851 census - Charlotte TALKS Q1 1851?

Got it I think.

Charles COCKETT married Charlotte COWHAM - yes?

Thomas TALKES (wid) married Charlotte COWHAM (wid) Algarkirk 11 Oct 1836 - I think that solves it. :)

His name was Charles Cockett, born 12 Feb 1811, illegitimate son of a Mary Cocket.  His first wife was Ann Day, daughter of John and Mary Day, all of Holbeach.  They married 20 October 1840 at the Parish Church in Holbeach, where Ann his first wife is buried - I've seen the gravestone.

I think his second wife was Eliza Cowham, who does come from Algakirk (Alderkirk),  do you agree?  I should order the certificate to be sure.

Got to get grandchildren from school, signing off for now.

The buildings on Mint Lane seem the same on both the 1868 and 1883 maps.

In those days, Mint Lane went south from Park Lane (now Park St) then turned east to meet the end of Silver St.  This latter part is now part of Mint Street.  The link through to Newland didn't exist.

OK, I think you've got it ;D
1.Thomas TALKES (widower) married Charlotte COWHAM (presumably Charlotte was mother of Eliza(beth) Cowham).

2. Thomas Talkes died leaving Charlotte Talkes a widow for the 2nd time

3. Charlotte Talkes married Thomas Atkin - ref Mar 1851 Boston 14 355

4. It looks as though Charlotte Atkin (a widow for the 3rd time  ???)  died aged 88 in Mar 1879 Spalding 7a 288

No - Charles Cockett married Eliza(beth) Cowham.

Many thanks for your help.

ps.  For some reason I cannot open tinyurls.  This is the message I always get "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading".  Is there another way of you letting me have the link?

Geoff

By the way, I have a note about Eliza(beth) Cowham which states "On her marriage details, her father is shown as Richard Cowham"  I got that info from the Lincs marriage website.

Can you find this Richard anywhere?  I've looked on IGI and can't find a Richard married to a Charlotte, or an Eliza(beth) daughter of Richard and/or Charlotte.

Thanks for the marriage of Richard Cowham to Charlotte Brewster.  I think from her age on various census that Eliza(beth) Cowham was born about 1819, so probably not the first child.

Thank you for the "not-so-tiny URL, lovely map.

I don't suppose I'll ever know why Charles' wife gave the address of Charles eldest son as her address.  If she wasn't getting on with Charles, it seems unlikely she would have moved in with his son and family. although I suppose as he was only 3 when his own mother died and 9 when his father re-married, he probably looked upon her as his mother.

I think I'll now close this topic, thanks as usual for your help with my Lincs. ancestors.
