lost - a family of Jefferies
« on: Monday 23 November 09 20:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

Sarah Wort [b. 1824 Upavon, Wiltshire] married James Jefferies in December 1859 at Melksham.

In 1891 Sarah is listed as widowed, living with her sisters Jane and Ellen in Upavon.

Both the census and BMD use the spelling JEFFERIES.

What I'd like help with is where were James & Sarah between 1859 & 1891?  For the life of me I cannot find them on the census.

[There is a death reg for a James Jefferies in Westbury in 1888, but I don't know if this is Sarahs' James].

Any help or suggestions of where to look would be most welcome.

1891 RG12/97/50/34

James JEFFERIES head 27 Tailors Assistant Paddington
Selina                  wife 27                              Cornwall St. Austell
James M               son   2                              Marylebone, London

1901 RG13/46/168/90

James JEFFERIES  Head 37 Tailor Salesman Marylebone, London
Selina S                wife   37                          Cornwall St. Austell
William H               son   12                           Marylebone
Ellen J                   dau     8                           Hammersmith
Daisy S                    "       3
Reginald                son    11mths
Sarah                    dau     6

I have searched for Sarah's son James but cannot find him on 1871 census. However I have found this entry everything fits apart from 'it's a girl'.

This is how it's looks on original census

1871 RG10/172/16/24 London, Marylebone

Abraham JEFFREYS head 43 brush maker wiltshire
Jane             "         wife  52                     monmouth
  "                 "       g/dau   6                     marylebone
(no name written just ditto) could this be a mistake and should have been entered as g/son :-\
