chaney's
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 18:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
My Grandmother was born in Canning Town, Selina Annie Chaney (1887). I  have access to the census records but cannot definitely trace her back through the Heybridge connection. Her father was George Chaney born around 1865.
From another forum two brothers were mentioned that came from Suffolk when Heybridge Basin was first established presumably to work on the Chelmer Canal. I am finding the cross-referencing difficult to follow.

Any  help or information would be appreciated.

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat. George Chaney is on the 1871 census, and he was born in Heybridge Basin/ Maldon. In 1881 he is a Ship Porter. In 1901 George is a Widower living with daughters Sarah,Alice, Selina,Ethel and son George.
In the 1911 census it appears that he has remarried, and is now married to Carrie, and there are a mixture of surnames living in the family. George's son George still seems to be there, and I guess all his daughters may have married and left the family home. He has been married 9 years by this time, and there are some more children from this marriage together with some with the surname Trevillion which possibly could be from his second wife's first marriage at a guess.
Hope this helps,
regards.

Thank for your welcome.

My Grandmother Selina apparently ran away, went to Dover and married in 1905 down there.
I knew that her father George had remarried and that her stepmother had several children already, I was told 5 boys (the house must have been heaving), not sure how true that is.
I didn't know her name was Carrie or likely that she was a Trevillion. And there were more children from the marriage?
Are you able to tell me names and ages, address etc.? 1901 address was Hoy St.
Regards,

Martin
