Coughlan/Coghlan Family Name Ontario
« on: Wednesday 25 November 09 15:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am looking for any information regarding Sarah Jane Coughlan (spelling possibly Coghlan).  She was born about 1850 in Ontario (possibly Brockville as that is where she married.  I do not have the names of her parents or the date of her marriage to Robert L. Willis.  Any information in the birth, marriage and/or census records would be greatly appreciated.
Karen

On the 1871 census in Leeds and Grenville North is
Robert Willis, 26, b. Ont, farmer and his wife Sarah Jane, 21, b. Ont and daughter Hester, 1, b. Ont.  All of Irish descent, religion is E. of Church (Church of England?)

In 1881 the family is in North Gower Carleton with 3 children, William, Charles and Bella.  You can use the link below to find their image in the 1881 census and the 1891.

I didn't find a marriage for them yet.  Son Charles died March 6, 1920 Ottawa Carleton with a brother-in-law as informant.  The parents were given as Robert Willis and Sarah Cochrane.
There was a late birth registration for son William on Dec 18, 1921 signed by his mother Sarah Jane.  He was born Jan 13, 1872 at North Gower Township, Carleton County to Robert Willis and Sarah Jane Coghlan.  Father was a farmer when he was born and Sarah Jane's address in 1921 was "The ?aples" Prescott, Ontario in Augusta Township, Grenville County.

1901 and 1911 census from this site.

When I have more time I will check the 1861 census to try and find Sarah with her parents although you can also do that from the link to the 1901 census as they have the 1852 census there as well.

Still can't find anything for a marriage for Sarah Jane.  Robert Willis and George Cochlan(sic) both of Kitley Township were witnesses to the marriage of John Coghlan, 26, farmer, born in and living in Kitley Township, s/o Charles and Evice Coghlan, when he married Delight Lewis 3 Jan 1871 at Frankville.

The family of Charles Coghlan included a Sarah Jane.  On the 1851 census, under Cochlan, they are in Kitley Township, Leeds and Grenville County.  Charles(47) and Avis(33) are both born Ireland and the children born in Ontario.  George(11), John( 8 ), Mary Ann (4), Sarah (3), David (1) and Ann Cochlan(17) b. Ireland, servant.

In 1861 the family under Cocklan are still in Kitley Township.  Sarah now is enumerated under Sarah J. (11) and the family has grown to include Charles(7), Susan E.(5), Davis(3) and Fanny(1).  In 1871 they are still in Kitley but everyone is now shown as born Ireland.  Charles Coghlan and his wife plus Mary Ann(23), David(21), Charles(17), Susan Elizabeth(15), A??(13), Fanny(11) and Emaline Louisa(5).  The next household is son George(29) and wife Catherine(21) and daughter Mary Rosella 3/12.  Mary married under Mary Ella to Edward Elvidge 5 June 1894 Lanark County and she was shown as the daughter of George Coghlan and Catherine Joynt.

George Coghlan, farmer, died 25 Oct 1887 of consumption - 2 years at age 46 years, 2 mos, 17 days.  Born Kitley Township.
David Coghlan, 33, b. Kitley Township, farmer s/o Charles and Avice Coghlan married Silas Challis, 30, b. Kitley Sept 17, 1884 Lombardy, Lanark County.  Wit:  A. Coghlan of Kitley

Under Willes there is a birth for Maud July 9, 1877 d/o Robert Willes, merchant and Sarah Jane Coghlan in the Township of Oxford, Grenville County.

Emmeline Louisa Coghlan died Dec 20, 1890 @ 23 of consumption (11 months).  Born and died Kitley Township.  Informant father Charles Coghlan.

Mrs. Coghlan died at 78, Aug 1, 1894 Kitley township Leeds, Concession #3, farmer's widow, born Ireland, cardiace failure 24 hours, informant - a doctor.

Not sure if you want more information on this family of Coghlans or not.  Hopefully someone else has better luck at finding a marriage registration for Sarah Jane.

Debbie

Hello Cosmac & Cntrygrl,
Thank you so very much for all the information on the Coughlan family.  It has been very helpful.  I am still looking for the marriage of Robert L. Willis and Sarah Jane Coghlan, but upon discovering the date of birth of one of the children, Esther,  I have determined that their marriage took place probably about 1869-1870.
Many thanks,
Karen
