Hi Paul

The 1861 census for Surrey is online http://www.1837online.com but not Sussex as of yet.

There are several William TERRYs of the correct age showing up including one age 15 born Clapham (in the Reigate area) but whether he is yours or not?  I seem to recall that there was another William TERRY born about the same time in the same place somewhere  ???

Many Thanks Casalguidi

I had a look before there but like you say, they didn't seem to have Sussex on yet.

There is poss  an entry for a William Terry Born Worth 1846 on IGI but its one that has been contributed, so no way of checking if its correct. Have not seen it anywhere else. There is also a Male Terry Born east Grinstead 1845 in the Index.

Also a William Terry Midhurst and a Lodsworth Terry.

I must admit I was quite surprised at how few William Terrys were born in Sussex or Surrey/Clapham/Wandsworth etc around 1845/6.

I may have a look on 1837online soon as I am trying to wait for a few look ups before spending more money on there!... ::)

That is interesting re a Terry in Clapham aged 15.  I think and there is also a Clapham in Sussex isn't there? (East Preston & petworth?)

I will have to see what I can pick up from the BC's and online and then make some visits when necessary.

Kind Regards

Paul

1851 census for Worth has William Terry age 5 born Clapham Surrey!!!

Charlotte 7 b Worth
Henry 2 b Worth
Sarah 9 b Worth

I will let you know how I get on when I get it!

LDS has a Christening parents William and Sarah....but dont want to jump the gun with some more leads before I attempt to confirm this William is mine!

Hello All posted below on another thread should have gone here!!!!

Hello All...

firstly a let down on the Reeves Death Cert 1950 I applied for

Trying again with another though

William Terry...Finlay got the birth cert wandsworth 1846 4 - 531 or 581

Yes this looks like the one!!!...put down both index to check and they found it under 4 - 581, its as follows

Born 30 November 1845
Clapham Wandsworth & Clapham Country Of Surrey
Registered 02 January 1846
Father William Terry Occupation Police Constable (   )
Mother Sarah Terry formally Vallance

I have a feeling that due to no other suitable alternatives, this must also be the Balcombe Terry in 1971 Census as well.

Phil I really appreciate your time and efforts with look up verification at FRC etc, on this and to Casalguidi who sees all of those twists and turns that matter...

I guess its possible that the 1871 Balcombe family split up along the lines you outlined...cant see anything to the contrary?

Thanks also to everyone else who helped it is much appreciated.

Now Phil...I think I saw you were the candidate for East Grinstead on OPC

Does Worth always come under that area around the time I am looking?

there are some good leads on LDS but I would like independent verification a small detail is one L or 2 in the Vallance name, but it seems to be spelt with either.

Here is the Vallance leads I have at the moment.

In your and anyone Else's opinion, where would be the best place to start looking for these and further back...Even if it means a visit. Would want to do as much as possible at the same time.

1800 abt Joseph Vallance (2 L) born Worth
1802 abt Ann Vallance (2 L) born Worth
1822 abt Marriage of Ann ? to Joseph Vallance Worth
1824 14 Mar Christening Martin Vallance Worth
1825 Sarah Vallance (2 L) born London
1825 12 June Sarah Valance christening (1 L) Worth Sussex
Christening Parents Joseph Valance and Ann
---------------------------------------------------------------
1818 19 April East Grinstead William Terry (parents William Terry and Sarah)
See also the 1881 census where William is 63. not sure if correct as in in 1851 census our William Terry snr is 31 so 1851 – 31 = 1820
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1841 Marriage in Cuckfield/Balcombe 27 Dec.Valance (1 L) & William Terry Senior
If birth is correct then Sarah Would only be about 16!!!, William Terry would be approx  21/23
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also wouldn't mind taking in the Tingleys at the same time Ifield/Crawley area.

PS

Phil I think I have now tracked  the 1851 Copthorne houshould down in its entirety and also followed some of them them on right through the Census to 1901!

It was really nice to get a good run of positives and watch them all pan out and go their separate ways.

I suppose thats what its all about..I am quite excited/relieved to have got past the Janet and William phase though...

Thanks again!

Paul
