childrens homes(completed )
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 00:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,416706.0.html
I am just back to my childrens homes post of early November.

I have gone back to the police gazette and found my children were "inmates"
of the Wellington receiving Home.  I had a look at a few sites but most have information for South Island homes, there was an email address for the Salvation army.  Can anybody confirm the Wellington home was run by the Sallies?

Also the childrens mother was released from jail in 1916, but picked up again the same day and sent to the Napier gaol hospital.  Papers Past articles say she could not be treated at the Wellinton gaol, Napier is the only place for her. I wondered if this was some sort of asylum? Do any chatters know?

Regards

Hi Leandra,,

I found this on PapersPast which may indicate the Wellington home was for boys and the girls were sent to St
Mary's.

Papers Past > Evening Post > 30 March 1915 > Page 6 > Page 6 Advertisements Column 5

At a sitting of the Juvenile Court this morning, before Mr. D. 0. 'A. Cooper. S.M.. four children of one family were taken out of the control of their parents. The boys (two) were committed to the Wellington Receiving Home, and the girls to St. Mary's Home. Upper Hutt. The father was ordered to pay 6s 6d per week towards the support of each child.

Cheers Janette

Hi Janette,

Thankyou for the link :D, you are right it does give a good description, and information that the records are sealed for 100 years.  I hope the children were well looked after, some were not I believe.

Cheers

Hi Leandra,

In PapersPast it states,

The Inspector explained that, by the Prisoners' Detention Act. passed m October l915, power was given for the retention of prisoners sufferlng from venereal or any other contagious disease He explained the Act,in which provlslon Is made to have the prisoner DETAINED IN THIS -GAOL HOSPITAL" until he (or she) a cured, irrespective of whether the sentence is shorter than the time required to cure the patient, whose- term of -Imprisonment and hospital detention would be concurrent and would not affect his term at all. or not Unfortunately Margaret Doody could not be treated so as the Wellington gaol had not been proclaimed by tho Governor to be a gaol within the meaning of tho Act. Napier is tho only place In New Zealand which has been so proclaimed.

Maybe it was a technical reason she was sent there and not an asylum,

Cheers Janette
