Edward Doddridge STONE
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 00:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello .. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a riddle please?

I have a will for my 4xG GM - Jane STONE (nee King) She was the First Wife of William STONE. They married in 1832, and she died in 1841. They had 3 children, the last being EDWARD DODDRIDGE STONE, who also died in 1841 - 24 days after his Mother.

I am trying my best to work out where the DODDRIDGE part comes into this.

The spanner in the works, is that at the begining of her will, she mentions a will of the late EDWARD SARGENT DODDRIDGE, and goes on to mention 2 other names (solicitors/Trustees maybe??) and monies that she gave them to put in trust to "better the education" of her Son, Edward.

Edward was born within wedlock of Jane and William ... but I can't figure out why he would have been given this name.

I thought perhaps her MOTHER may have been a Doddridge prior to marrying Jane's Father, or even that Jane herself may have married a Doddridge before marrying william Stone ... but I can't find anything !!!

HELP?!?!? .... this is driving me up the wall

Thank you .....

Doddridge does not necessarily have to be a name from within the immediate family -it could be the surname of a friend/neighbour or other relative

My great grandparents gave one of their daughters the christian names Margaret Bullock and another Ann McCormick - neither of which were surnames from within the family

so she could have named her Son after a generous employer?  hmmmm .... perhaps I am looking into this too kuch - I find it odd that she was left a CONSIDERABLE amount of money in a will from Edward Sargent Doddridge, and she called her Son his name ....

Thanks though Carole .. that is something to think about.

Whereabouts in Devon did Edward Doddridge Stone knock about? Both Doddridge (misc spellings) and Stone are surnames that crop up frequently in the Plymstock area...

If you google "EDWARD SARGENT DODDRIDGE" you will find that there are a number of documents referring to him in the Devon Record Office and elsewhere.
