Marriage in Hong Kong
« on: Saturday 12 March 05 07:45 GMT (UK) »
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but.. ???

My g-grandparents, Thomas Hood Bentley and Camilla Denham, were married in Hong Kong in 1880.  He was working as superintendent of a docks there, and also captaining trading vessels, and they continued to live there or in Taiwan for a number of years.

I have looked in overseas marriages on 1837online and I cannot find them.  I have looked under both surnames, in GRO consular marriages.  There was no association with the military forces so it would not have been a military marriage.

Anyone have any ideas about where a record of this marriage might be?

Hi MarieC

Try

Overseas Section
General Register Office
Smedley Hydro
Trafalgar Road
Southport
PR8 2HH

Telephone 0151 471 4801

Call first as there are fees, but, as you have the place and year perhaps they would look in their records for you.

Wow!

That was quick, Wendi!  I only just posted!!!  Rootschatters are so efficient!!!

I'd love to follow your suggestion, but as I live in Australia, it is a little bit difficult!

Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions?

Thanks a lot

:)  Some of us are up early here!

There is a web page

www.statistics.gov.uk/registration

which seems to redirect, but I've just checked it and it works for me!

Overseas section is a bit tucked away, but they do keep all records of overseas
marriages for British Nationals

Good luck

Hi Sue,

As I said the Overseas Section is a bit hidden away.  The actual link to How to obtain a certificate is:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/obtainingcertificates/howtoverseas.asp

Or from the main page(see other message) keep following the links to obtaining a marriage certificate and eventually you'll get there!

Thanks Wendi  :)

I went to that website and scouted around, but it didn't lead me to any online way of looking for that marriage (as I said, I would have thought I would find it on 1837online but no).

I did find that the marriage certificate would probably not be very informative, judging from the information they said would be on it.

Might have to put this on the backburner until/if I ever get to England again and can visit these places in person.  :(

Thanks again,

MarieC
