West Africa marriage certificate
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 23:10 GMT (UK) »
My parents were married in what was then the Gold Coast after the war. How could I get hold of their marriage certificate? Would they have had to register the marriage in the UK when they came home? I'm not sure of the exact date or where the wedding took place - I've found them on the incoming passenger lists of the "Accra" when they came home but are the outgoing lists available somewhere as well?

If they were British citizens (or at least one of them was a British citizen) then the marriage may be registered in the overseas registers and available through the GRO. (I don't know if it was legally required to register at the time; certainly some overseas events seem to go 'missing').

You could look for them on outgoing passenger lists here:
http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?redef=0

The above site (and also familyrelatives.com ) have the GRO overseas indexes. There are a few different sets (e.g. different ones for someone who was in the military and temporarily overseas than for civilians who registered their marriage with the consulate).

Thanks - have found them on the outgoing passenger lists on findmypast.com - heading out separately. But no sign of a marriage record. Dad was a teacher but I don't know what school he worked in - any other possible sources?
