Where do I go from here?
« on: Sunday 29 November 09 01:43 GMT (UK) »
I have eventually found my 3rd Great Grandfather, Henry Bailey after looking for him for a number of years on the 1841 Census!!  He is on this census and BARLEY and not Bailey which is probably why I strugged for so long!!

He is living in Newcastle, Staffs with his wife Susannah (nee Dawson) and their son William (William Henry on later censuses).  I sent for their marriage certificate and found that his father was Richard Bailey who was an Ag Lab.  I then searched Familysearch.org  and found christening details of Henry, his parents being Richard and Hannah, I then checked to see if I could find a marriage in Staffs for Richard Bailey and "Hannah".  I looked for a year before Henry's birth and found in 1816 a Richard Bailey and Hannah Hulme of Norton, Staffordshire which I think maybe Horton, Staffordshire.

This is the furthest back I have been on any branch of my family tree and I haven't a clue where I need to look next.  I've looked for Richard and Hannah Bailey (4th Great Grandparents) on the 1841 Cenus but can only find Richard and Ann, which could be correct, but I have no way of knowing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction because I have only used census records and BMD's and Familysearch.org and don't know where to go next?

Thanks
Chrissy

regarding 1841 census
I have quite a few Hannah's in my tree and they are very often found on census material as Anne,Ann or Anna.
Hope this helps!

Lokked at potential bros /sis of Richard born Horton circa 1791 which is the year of birth stated on  marraige details.
2x possibles
Joseph Bailey b apr 1790 parents Richard Bailey and Elisabeth
Rachel Bailey b.1792 parents Peter Bailey and Susanna
Do any of the Richard Bailey census details combine any of these names with your Richard .... if so you may have Richard's parents

The only definate details I have for Richard is from the marriage details on IGI record, that he married Hannah Hulme on 6 August 1816 in Horton, Staffs.

I have found a Richard Bailey in 1851 living in Staffs, he's a widower and down on the form as a Visitor.  He is there with lots of other Baileys.   Can't read the occupation details. I don't know if this is him.  I have deaths of 3 Hannahs 1842 in Ecclesall Bierlow, 1840 in Cheadle, and 1843 in Newcastle under Lyme - all in Staffordshire.

As you can see I know virtually nothing about Richard, so with this little info I just don't know where to go from here.

Might be worthwhile looking at the original register entry at the local record office to see whether it contains any more detail. Should at the very least have the names of the witnesses to the marriage at this time. Hope they wereefamily members and not professional witnesses.

Norton, Staffordshire which I think maybe Horton, Staffordshire.

There are places in Staffs with both names. Norton is a few miles SW of Horton and to the NE of Stoke.
GENUKI has pages for both:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Horton/index.html
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/NortonintheMoors/index.html

With them being relatively close and old handwriting there's plenty of scope for confusion and mistranscription without the joy of a very common name in Staffs!

I've looked at the IGI and they have both the marriage and baptism records as "submitted" by an LDS member, rather than being extracted from the parish records. Both Horton & Norton parishes are on the IGI for this period, but I couldn't see equivalent extracted records - sorry...

Stoke Archives have fiche copies of many North Staffs registers, while Stafford RO covers these and the rest of the county.

I've several Baileys including some with the same names, but none that match yours for date. Good luck!
