Lost family Hit a brick wall Help please
« on: Monday 30 November 09 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Family emigrated to Toronto in 1908, have found them on 1911 census in Toronto. They are William Neill born 1868 Irish, Louisa M Neill born 1870 English and their children Marion Pilch born 1899, Frances born 1901, Florence born 1902 and William born 1905. After this I have no information, they seemed to have disappeared.
Also my Great Grandfather William Neill emigrated in 1902 to St Catharines with his daughter Minnie and son in law Abner Joiner. I have found the deaths of William and Minnie but Abner Joiner is a mystery. I have found them all on the 1911 census.
Could anyone be of help? I would dearly love to know what happened to them and maybe I still have relations there. I live in Northern Ireland and can't find a way to get information. Thank you

Can't be of any direct help - sorry - but have you tried posting on the Toronto board of rootsweb?

I also suggest you put the family name in the subject title - it will come up on searches better.

Didn't notice your number of posts!! Welcome to rootschat - it is a great forum full of very helpful and knowledgable people.

I have a Nova Scotian great grandmother & have had amazing help from a message board called nsroots - there may be an equivalent one for Ontario. Try  g**gl*ing Ontario or Toronto roots.

You could try www.canada411.ca for Neills & Joiners in Toronto - see if there are any still there [this relies on a few generations of productive males of course!!]. But often immigrants moved on after after a while. If I think of any other useful boards I'll let you know.

The St. Catharine's library has an online index for BMDs in the area but doesn't seem to have entered records past the 1920s yet.
You could contact the library and ask them to search for Abner in their city directories which might give you a clue as to when he died.  On Minnie's death registration in 1930 he is shown as the informant living at 46 Henry St. so it's a starting point for the library.

Probably William's wife and family arriving from Liverpool on the Empress of Ireland and disembarking Dec 4, 1908 at Saint John New Brunswick.  Louisa using her middle name of Marion?

The Toronto Library will do searches of their city directories.  You could track William and his children .  http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/  Use the "Ask a Librarian" feature.  They limit what they search per email but don't  limit the number of emails and requests.

If your relatives stayed in the Toronto area this pay site is excellent.  http://pagesofthepast.ca/

Looks like Louisa M. Neill, age 43 and Marion Neill, age 13 travelled back to England aboard the Empress of Ireland arriving in Liverpool, England on June 5, 1913 which left from Quebec, Canada.

It was a short visit to England  :)

Louisa and Marion returned to Canada aboard the Laurentic on July 26, 1913 leaving Liverpool, England and arriving in Quebec.  They are headed to Toronto, Ontario and note that had been in Canada from 1907 to 1913.
