John Killoran from Geevagh Co. Sligo
« on: Tuesday 01 December 09 14:10 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find some info about my great grandfather John Killoran. He immigrated to Worcester, Massachusetts in 1915 when he was 21 years old from Geevagh/Sligo. The Ellis Island ship manifest says that he was going to see his brother Thomas. I have looked through the 1901 Sligo census and based on my calculations John would have been about 7-8 years old (born around 1894). The one family that looks like it might be the right one was in the townland Mount Town and the parish was Killadoon. The family is listed as John (50), Maria(40), Thomas Joseph(14), Patrick(12), Michael(10), John(8 ), Mary Ellen(6), Lizzie(5), and Bridget(9mo). Can anyone help me and let me know if I have the right family?

Have you tried to find record of brother Thomas arriving in US in Ellis Island records yet to see who he has listed as next of kin at home?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

In the 1920 census of Mass: There is a Thomas Killoran Imm: 1907.
He is with his family. If you have not got this info will give it to you.
Looking at the ships there is a Thomas Killoran imm: 1907 going to Mass:
Ship Baltic
It appears that quite a number of passengers sent a Telegram to Relatives
including Thomas. Telegram sent to His Brother Michael at 8 Grand-North Street.
    In 1920 Thomas age is 34Yrs. :)

It must be the right family because in 1911 John is still at home aged 18 whilst usefully Thomas has been wrongly entered aged 23 then crossed out. Other census information suggest that Thomas, the oldest child was only one away from home.

Good luck,
J.T.A.
