Frederich Philip Thurrauch 1896
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 20:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find out what happened to Frederick Philip Thurranch (sometimes written as Thurrauch)

He was born 1896 Tottenham London, parents Philip F Thurranch and Leonora Bayer.
In the 1901 English census he was in West Ham
In 1911 he was a butcher's lad in Tooting.

He emigrated to Canada on 5 April 1914 from Liverpool to Nova Scotia on the Andania.

Can anyone find what happened to him after that?

Thanks

Jan

In case you haven't viewed it, the incoming Canadian passenger list indicates that Frederick was going to Glencoe, Ontario but it looks like he didn't stay there. Here's a link to the passenger list at Library and Archives Canada (he's on line 21):

I may have found WWI Attestation Papers for Frederick under the names Thurrick and Thurrich (there are two sets - one from 1916 and one from 1918). In 1916 he was turned down for being medically unfit but enlisted in 1918 again (it says he has a weak heart when asked whether he had been declared medically unfit before). In 1916 his residence was listed as Minto, Manitoba while he was in Regina, Saskatchewan. On both his date of birth is listed as 22 July 1896 (on one form he says he was born in London and on the other in East Ham, London). His next of kin was named as Leanor Thurrick, 119 Lockwood Avenue, London, England on one form and as Lena Thurrick, Luxford Avenue, East Ham, London on the other. Here's a link to the forms at LAC:

There are instructions at that link on how to order the files if you would like a copy. The cost depends on how big the file is.

I found an incoming Canadian passenger list which appears to have his return from WWI. He was on the Olympic which arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 16 May 1919. His name is spelled Thurich this time and he says he's returning to Saskatoon. Here's a link to the passenger list (he's listed on the lower right hand section of the page):

Unfortunately Saskatchewan marriage records from more than 75 years ago are not available on line yet and deaths only go to 1917. Saskatchewan charges an outrageous amount for a search and certificate so I wouldn't recommend it. There is no way of knowing when the Saskatchewan Vital Statistics genealogy database will be completed and, as far as I can tell, it hasn't been updated within the past couple of years. Here's a link in case it is every completed:

Canada: Patterson, Brown, Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Johnston(e), Gorsuch, Kitchin/Kitchen
United States: Patterson, Smith, Brown, Vance, Bower(s), Newberry, Best, Love, Gorsuch
England (Northumberland): Brown, Whitfield, Henderson
Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, East Lothian): Johnston(e), Bell, Galloway, Campbell, Robertson, Williamson, Thomson, Crawford
Germans from Russia: Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Meach, Lorenz

Thank you both very much - that's him.

It's strange that he had a weak heart as his father was the only surviving child of 8, the rest died in infancy - I wonder if it was heriditary?

Interesting that his mother lived in Loxford Avenue, as that's where my great grandmother lived in 1911, so it seems as if the family lived near each other.

Thank you again
