Moota WW2 Prison Camp

Hi

The link below is to a topic I got involved with on the Lancashire board, then I realised I did not know the full details.

So, I'm wondering is anybody here knows anything about the men imprisoned in the War at Moota?  Were they all service men or were there some civilian Alian Internees?  Also, were there any Italians?  Were there other nationalities?  With that chapel, there could well have been some Italians.

Hi Emms.....I have just noticed your enquiry.

From 'Aspatria'  by Dr. John Rose and Margaret Dunglinson (Phillimore Books Chichester Sussex)..........

The land at Moota was requisitioned from Sir Hilton Lawson in 1942.

1,200 German POWs were moved there and stayed for two years, working on neighbouring farms.

They built and decorated the camp church.

After the Germans were moved 1,200 Italian POWs were brought and remained until 1945.


In 1946 a group of Displaced persons from Hungary and Lithuania arrived. They were repatriated in 1950.

The land was finally returned to Sir Hilton Lawson who sold out to Mr. Eilbeck who developed a turkey farm and motel.
