Joshua Brooks-Strange indeed.

Whilst I was looking for my Martha Beech in 1901,I was curious about an Elizabeth Brooke given as a Boarder who was staying with Martha in 1901,and given as born in Stoke in c 1878.In what must be a rareity for the time it seems her Mother remarried whilst her Father was still alive!In 1881 she is given as the daughter of a Joshua Brookes and his Wife "Lavina".Other children are given as Joshua born c 1874 and Arthur born c 1880.In 1891 Elizabeth and Arthur are given as the Stepchildren of a William Payne given as born in Bewdley Worcestershire and his Wife Lavinia given as born in Burslem in c 1840.However Joshua(c1874) is living with his Father in 1891,his Father as in 1881 given as a Butcher.The strange thing is though,Joshua Senior is still shown as married.Its a very strange state of affairs!Explanations please???

Is there a marriage for Joshua and Lavinia on freebmd? 

If not - Is there one for Lavinia and William Payne

She may not have married Joshua,  or if she did - she may have left Joshua to go and live with William

Freebmd has practically seized up at the moment so I can't check

There is an 1889 marriage in Stoke for William Payne - Lavinia Tunnicliff on same page Staffs BMD shows it was at St Marks Shelton

1861 shows Lavinia Tunnicliff b 1841 Burslem living with mother in law as follows

Elizabeth Tunnicliff 63 b Tunstall
William  22 son b Tunstall
Lavinia 20 daughter in law b Burslem
Henry  8 Months b Hanley
Jane Wade 31 dtr married
RG9 Piece 1934 Folio 103 Page 48

William married Lavinia Hargreaves in 1860 at Wolstanton St Margaret

In 1871 - Joshua is Josiah aged 30 single and in lodgings in Hanley

I suspect Lavinia never married Joshua

I must confess I haven't found a marriage for Joshua and Lavinia,you did well to find him in 1871 I couldn't!The only time up to 1881 is in 1841 showing as the son of Joshua and Elizabeth Brooks with two sisters Mary and Olive.
