Cheltenham - house from 1901 census
« on: Saturday 12 March 05 19:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have the 1901 census image for relatives and wondered if anyone has enough up to date local knowledge to tell me if the property still exists and if it does, where is it?

1901 Census RG13/2466
Cheltenham, St Marks Parish, West Ward

The house I am looking for is named 'Westbourne' and is on the same census sheet as houses named 'Dalheith', 'Ashley Villa', 'Clarence Villa', 'Oakland Villa', 'Beech Villa', 'Mersham' and 'Lucknow'.

Any help with finding this property greatly appreciated

Hi

Can you give the full census ref or a road name, please?

I'd be happy to have a look and compare with local info

Thanks  ;)

Administrative county - Gloucestershire

Ecclesiastical parish - St Marks
Municipal borough - Cheltenham
Ward of municipal borough - West Ward
Page 25 on top right hand corner of page
below that in area where it says town or village or hamlet is the figure 176

Hi, I forgot to add that the only place that came up with the same name when I searched the internet was Westbourne House, New Road, Woodmancote.
But as I have no local knowledge I haven't got any idea if this would be a match

Hello

Yes i Googled too!  Woodmancote, Cheltenham is actually a few miles past the race-course to the north of the town.  I tried the other house names too and the only one I came up with is a rest home in Gloucester Road, which seems quite a good fit.

I was hoping you might have a road name so I could nip over and look.  Mind you the place is being invaded for the Gold Cup so I usually stay indoors until everyone goes home again (Friday!!!)

Will try to access the census, but the name of the family would make it much easier.

I would say it was Gloucester Road, Cheltenham - this would be in St Marks parish.  It seems to be pages and pages of named houses with no street name.  However, on page 8 I saw the name "Fernhurst" - a friend of mine used to live there (on Gloucester Road) and I saw the house yesterday.  I know every house along that road seems to have a name carved on the stone lintel above the front door.

Have agreed by pm that it must be gloucester road.  May try to run the gridlock of race traffic sometime to see - but if anyone lives that side of town, I'd love to know!!
