What did he do??
« on: Monday 07 December 09 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I would like some help in finding out what my grandad did in the war.
Here are his details
Philip Llewellyn Steele bn 2.7.1918 Leighton, Shropshire
We think he was a desert rat and a driver.
My dad thinks he went in 1940/41 and came home 42/43. Also that he was captured and was in a POW camp in Italy and came home on medical grounds.
I have a postcard somewhere from when he was in hospital over hear when he came back. I also have a postcard his mother sent him when he was at Kensington Barracks.
He never spoke of it much so what we know is very patchy.
So how can I find out more about him?
Thank you
Katie Steele

Hi

Your dad can get his service records from the army via the veterans service then that will give you guidelines on what and where.  You do have to pay for the service but most people find it well worth it. The webpage is as follows:
www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

Good luck

The Very Seriously Ill  (VSI) were repatriated under a scheme organised by the Red Cross under the auspices of the Geneva Conventions.

As well as the records from the Vets Agency, have a poke around via the Red Cross in Geneva

The cards are still there....
One more charge and then be dumb,
