Don't want to add to matters, but do you have Parker Charlton's marriage cert to Maria whom he was married to in the 1871 census?

It's just that I have been scouting around and think I found him in the Kirklees census of 1851 and as you will see there is a Sister in law but this is a married one so doesn't help.

The Dewsbury connection is fascinating reading. It seems that His marriage to Mary Stewart( a widow) was a second marriage for them both as they were married in 1862 in Leeds and George was born the following year in Brick Street Hunslet. Mary came from Rolston, Cambridge.I am trying to find the Parker connection now and feel encouraged to press ahead after all your help after so long in the doldrums.

Did you mean Royston? According to Genuki, this is in Hertfordshire, although it is near Bassingbourne. In fact they seem to overlap:

"BASSINGBOURN (or Bassingbourne) is a parish sad village, the latter being about 3 miles north-west from Royston station a large portion of the township at Royston and the hamlet of Knsesworth is within this parish, which is in the hundred of Armingford, petty sessional division of Arrington and Melbourn, union and county court district of Royston, rural deanery of Shingay and archdeaconry and diocese of Ely. "

So, Mary could have lived in Royston but been christened at Bassingbourn.
