Where is Bolderen?
« on: Sunday 13 March 05 07:27 GMT (UK) »
In the 1881 census my GG Grandfather Parker Charlton was living in Leeds and his birthplace was given as Bolderen. I can find no trace of the name and am now at a standstill to find his parents.
Can anyone help please?

There is a Boldron in the Teesdale registration district, North Riding/Durham - could it be that?

I think it is Boldron which is Durham (quite close to Barnard Castle, which Parker gives as his place of birth in 1871).  You will find it at http://www.streetmap.co.uk

Thank You for the swift response, I will have a root around in that area, it was the census saying it was in Yorkshire that confused me somewhat.

Hi Nessie

Sorry, just noticed your post.  I'm sure Casalguidi is right.

Boldron, whilst being in the current administrative County of Durham, was in the old North Riding of Yorkshire.

If you need to check any other place names a good place to try is http://www.gazetteer.co.uk/

Best wishes

Could it be:

Boldon
(NW of Sunderland in Durham)

Bodedern
(on Anglesey, Wales)

Boldron (as mentioned above)
a village and township in Startforth parish, N.R. Yorkshire, 2 miles from Barnard Castle, which is the railway station and post and telegraph office, with a church mission room and Primitive Methodist chapel. Acerage of township, 1238; population 136.  (1891)

Many thanks to you all, why couldn't they leave Yorkshire as it was intended to be? ;D
Will have to think how to proceed on checking for Charltons in Boldron prior to 1881.
