Lister
« on: Tuesday 15 December 09 13:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, can anyone help with some missing information please? On the 1881 England census, my relatives Lister, living at Camberwell Surrey, are listed as having 3 kids, James, Hans and Lucy. In the 1891 census there are 3 new kids but Hans and Lucy are missing. I can't seem to find any record of their death or see them on any other census. Any ideas what might have happened to them? Thanks.

In the 1891 census they are living in 3 Edinburgh Mansions, Avenue Road, Camberwell, London.

Are they misspelled?

I saw a son George in the 1901 census, but it hasnt helped to find them in 1891 (on Ancestry.com anyway)

freebmd.rootsweb.com
shows Hans Alfred Lister and Lucy Elizabeth Lister, just to give their full names.

Possibilities include that they changed their names - have you looked for just "Alfred Lister", for example?
Also that they were sent to live with relatives or to school overseas - it appears (from www.familysearch.org) that they may have married in Scotland in 1872, so perhaps Alexander had relatives there?

Indeed, Alexander was in Kirkcaldy, Fife (as a lodger) in 1871.

Have his parents been traced to make sure they didn't have grandchildren with them in 1891? According to Alexander's IGI baptism entry (1848, British Chaplaincy, St Petersburg) his parents were James Thomas Upton LISTER and Harriet nee BIGGINS.

I'm another one who can't find Frances and children in Camberwell in 1891.   Is it right that Alexander had died by then (Sep qtr 1890, Strand)?

On second thoughts, James Thomas Upton LISTER and Harriet BIGGINS or BRIGGINS apparently married in St Petersburg as early as 1829 and had the first of many children in 1830, so perhaps were not around (or too old) to look after grandchildren by 1891...

(All per IGI).

I think on A***** they might be transcribed as "Ficken"? (The son Edward b. France is mentioned on another message).  Alexander not with them at that time (but seems to have died in 1895 aged 47, indexed as Alexaner Alfred Lister)

There's also the Alexander A. Lister in 1891 who is in Lancashire - possible?

A mention in The Times:
The Times, Thursday, Jan 12, 1893; pg. 4; Issue 33846; col A
Alexander Alfred Lister, 44, was convicted of of obtaining a cape and trousers by false pretences and sentenced to 12 months hard labour (he claimed to be an inspector of theatres and music halls working for the London County Council, and gave them a bad check).

http://newspapers.bl.uk
  - shows a mention of the above and also his inquest in 1895.

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/25868/pages/5762
 - and in 1888 he seems to have been in business in Birmingham?

Not sure why I cant see it on Ancestry but on Findmypast they are on the 1891 census. Alexander is gone but his wife is listed as married (on 1901 census she is widowed). It's RG12, piece 487, folio 116, page 2. I've also seen an Alexander A Lister on 1891 census in Lancashire (Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester) who calls himself an engineer, traveller. He is married to an Amy Lister, quite a bit younger, who is an actress. Although this Alexander says he was born in Liverpool??? (RG12/3186).
