36th ulster divison
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 21:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Looking for information on Great Grandmother's brother who died at the Somme.  His name was John Ferguson, John was born abt 1881 in Belfast.
I am led to believe that he was part of the 36th Ulster Division. Any information would be appreciate.
Thank you
Americangirl :)

Hello Americangirl,

With a bit more information, such as his regiment and service number, it should be easy to pick up his entry on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Debt of Honour and Soldiers Died in the Great War, if you don't already have them.

This link will outline the movements etc of 36th Division:

Hi Americangirl

As Phil said, some more detailed information will help to narrow him down.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this memorial from the All of Ireland Peace Park near Messines

Phil and Glen,

Thanks for your quick response.  I am trying to get more information from my relatives in Northern Ireland.  I do not think your John Ferguson is the correct one, mine was born in County down.  If I get more information I will post it.
Thank you and Merry Christmas

Kitty

The implication of your information is that he died in 1916 during the battle of the Somme. This in broad terms was July to Nov 1916

If I try CWGC site and try for deaths of J Ferguson in 1916,  I cannot see a John Ferguson of the right age serving in an Ulster Div Regt and buried at the Somme.

Once you get more info, feed it into that CWGC site, the entries are both full and accurate.
