COMPLETED WITH THANKS James SEARLE - Hemyock (1841/1851 Census)
« on: Sunday 20 December 09 15:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace the parents of James Searle born c. 1837 in either Hemyock or Clayhidon. My information for James comes from his daughter Mary-Ann's marriage in 1878 in Taunton; James's occupation is listed as Shoemaker.

I believe I  have found him (and Mary-Ann)  in the 1861 census at  East Reach in Taunton, occupation listed as Shoemaker, birth place Hemyock. In the 1871 census listed as Cordwainer Master & Boy living in Fouracres Building, Southstreet, Taunton; his birth place as Clayhidon (  Searle mis-transcribed as Seadile) with wife Betty (Elizabeth). In the 1881 he (and family) and still in Taunton with his birth place listed as Clayhidon.

I have been unable to find James in either the 1841 or 1851 census.  If anyone has access to either the PR's for Hemyock or Clayhidon and could offer a look-up that would be great, or a look-up in the census's.

Very many thanks  :)

Hi,
There is a possible on the 1851
Ho107/1921  777/1

Family household+
James Sarle  servant  13  ag lab  Clayhidon, Devon

It seems to be written as Sarle, I can t read the actual place of birth on the image but its transcribed as  Clayhidon, Devon.

1841 Census?
Ho107/230  11/17

James Sarle with family in Clayhidon.

Again quite difficult to read actual image.

Hope this might be him, I can t find any other likely entries.
Best wishes

Hi Angie,
When researching we must be sure of our facts before going back too far. If you purchase Mary Janes birth cert it will give you her Mothers maiden name.
Then you look for the Marriage and the Marriage Cert will give you James and Elizabeths Fathers names and occp's.

Birth Reg;
Mary Jane SEARLE
December 1859
Taunton
5c 431

Having said that here I go jumping to conclusions :D

Possible Marriage;
James SEARLE
September 1859
Wellington Som
5c 553
On same page Elizabeth TROAKE
( weird, I was looking at a Troake earlier tonight!)

If James was a Shoemaker he probably would have been an Apprentice in 1851.

Trish :)

:) Thank you Wred, and thank you Trish.   It is indeed James Searle and Elizabeth Troake; I am aiming to send for their  marriage cert in the new year as the 'Troake' family are new to my tree - that's always interesting when you get a new 'leaf'.  I am looking now into Elizabeth's father William Troake (have a post on the Devon board).

Very many thanks for your time and effort and a Merry Christmas

Regards

Angie
