Figuring out ports, ships, etc.
« on: Monday 21 December 09 01:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm new to all of this and I was wondering if you could tell me the best way to find out which port/ship someone came to the US on and where they came from? All I really have to go on is the name Martin Slattery b. 1820 in Ireland and was living in Hoosick Falls NY in the 1880s or sooner.

Thanks!

The passenger lists from that time frame are not very detailed, so it's hard to narrow down if you have the right person and often the information where they are from is rather vague.  Sometimes, going in the other direction is more helpful - for example, if you can figure out where/when they died & get an obituary, it may list a town of origin, parents, or siblings.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty much stuck on any of my lines that had people coming to the US in the mid-1800's, so I would recommend keeping expectations low.

Hi lmulcahy: Are you looking for any type of information on Martin Slattery or just his voyage over?

In 1880 there are two Martin Slatterys near Hoosick. Both are born in 1820 in Ireland. One is in Hoosick and is married to Julia Slattery with several children; the other is in Troy and is married to Mary Slattery with one child. Hoosick is, or was, a part of Troy, New York.

Martin Slattery (born 1820), wife Julia, and their children are also in the 1860 and 1870 U.S censuses. In 1860, they are in Rensselaer, New York under the name Martin Slatrey. In 1870 they are in Troy, New York.

You can see the censuses here: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html Allow the page to load. Then click on Browse our record collections. And then click on the map of the U.S.

I checked the Castle Garden website for entries into New York City before Ellis Island opened in 1892. There is a Martin Slattery arriving 25 May 1850, but he is listed as 50 years old. Perhaps came in through Boston, Philadelphia, or Canada.

Hope this helps.

John, sorry I forgot to mention - some of this was covered in a prior thread:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,425690.msg2906490.html#msg2906490
