Phillips-Broughton (complete)
« on: Monday 21 December 09 06:49 GMT (UK) »
looking for help. I have a sister of my grandfather who went to Canada Her name was Margaret Edith Phillips-Broughton and she married a Walter Peter Thorne on 19 Feb 1921 in York Ontario Canada. It was registered in Newmarket at St John Chysostom. I have emailed the church and they have no burials by either name so obviously they moved on. I was also hoping to find something in the local paper.
I have cousins in Canada somewhere. Can someone show me where to go from here.
thx
Duane Broughton ???

It appears that St. John Chrysostom is a Catholic Church.  Was your grandfather's sister Catholic?  If not, they may be buried in the Newmarket area, but not in the actual church cemetery (if there was one).

There are several Thorne's living in Newmarket.  You could try writing, to see if any are descendants:

Would you have their approximate dates of birth, please?  It might help in our search.  Also, do you have any further information about Walter, please?

 - shows a cemetery entry for Margaret E. Thorne, cemetery    St John Chrysostom, Newmarket, York.
The church might not have a record of it for whatever reason but if you contact the York Region Branch, OGS you will be able to purchase the full information.

Yes, I realise i had the information in regards to her burial. Firstly, no my family isn't catholic, so it threw me. I thought that maybe Walter was, but the only record for him i can find has a Walter Thorne burried in a Metheodist cemetary. Sorry i don't have my info with me today, so i am trying to remember what i can.
Margaret was born 17/12/1898, Margaret Edith Phillips-Broughton. She dropped the phillips on migrating, as did my Grandfather.
I contacted the church and they say they have no record of her burial, but my search says that she was buried there and gives a reference, i dont have it but it was something like NMK-YRK-001. The first and last I'm sure of. But my reading was Newmarket, York and maybe microfish. not sure.

The details on that database come from the various Ontario Genealogy Societies. They have a list of addresses here:
http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/addresses.html

The reference for her is "YK-NWM-001" and the "YK" says the info came from the York Branch of the OGS. They will be able to tell you further details of that burial and where the information came from.

Hi Duane,

I looked at Walter and Margeret's marriage certificate from Feb. 21, 1921 and they were married in the Anglican Church at 47 Robert Street, Toronto, Ontario.

Both Walter and Margaret have Anglican down as their religion.  The both have Toronto, Ontario as their residence when married.

I'm in Newmarket today and can see what I can find on the Margaret buried in the catholic cemetery, however, there is snow on the ground so it might not be visible  :)
