Hathaway and Williams, Blaina, Monmouthshire
« on: Monday 21 December 09 19:20 GMT (UK) »
Just starting to work on my mother's stepfather's family.  I have hit a brick wall already.  His father, Charles Hathaway married Sep Q 1905, possible BMD match to a Mary Elizabeth Williams.  His wife is listed as Elizabeth in 1911 census, age 29, b. Blaenavon.  Looking back through 1901 and 1891 looks like she may be Elizabeth  (Lizzie on 1891), dau. of Job and Sarah Williams.  However, 1891 and 1901 give her bp as America/USA.  Found probable Job and Sarah on 1880 US census with daughter Mary - listed as Pollie on 1891.  They were in Dickson City, Lackawanna, PA.
Going ahead through the BMD for post 1912 births I found seven children with the surname Hathaway and maiden name of Williams.
Short of ordering the marriage cert., hoping someone out there has a connection with either of these families.
Charles's son, Charles b. 1907 married my grandmother Mary Kate Oliver in Sussex England, late 1920's.
Charles his father, b. ca 1881 was the son of Charles and Harriet (Stone).  Charles b ca 1842 came from Gloucestershire, various birthplaces given, but believe at this point he is the son of John Hathaway and Sarah Morse.
Any help appreciated.

Hi

In the absence of anybody with a connection who can help you with info - with a surname like Williams in Wales it really would be advisable to buy a copy of that 1905 marriage cert to establish her fathers name - particularly in view of the 1911 birthplace difference

The 1901 has a Mary Williams b 1883 Blaenavon working as a servant there

Charles born 1907 is my uncle. Elizabeth Williams was my grandmother. My name is Mervyn Hathaway (Father Thomas, born in Blaina in 1922 and one of Charles' many brothers) and I have just started on this. The assumption re Sarah Morse I believe to be wrong because it's the same alley I went up. On the 1881 census Charles (the senior) is shown to be born in Warmley in Gloucester and circa 1849 - He married Harriet (nee Stone) after moving to Blaina, whilst Charles Morse Hathaway is still showing up on censuses in the Bristol area!. Check out the user HLW on this forum who has done some good work on this. (I found that particular posting by searching 'Hathaway Siston'). For info, the 1881 census extract is as follows:

Hi fellow Hathaway followers!

In response to dianacanada post : I am in early stages of investigating this side of family, but i can confirm that Charles Hathaway 1849 is the son of John Hathaway and Hannah Amsbury Punter

In response to dick90 post: Its all the same family but a different strain, I am assuming your grandmother was Rosetta? She was the sister of my ggrandfather William Augustus 1876

Would love to hear from you Helen

Hello

I have Charles Morse Hathaway as a son of John H. and Sarah Morse, and grandson of John Hathaway and Charlotte Miller. I would love to know more of this family.
