German ancestor
« on: Wednesday 23 December 09 13:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone would be able  to help me, or at least put me in the right direction.

Joseph, REST (m) Annie Von-Spreckeisen – Germany
There was 1 known daughter:  Marion who was born December 1913 – Hamburg, Germany.

(Joseph Rest also had a brother Frederick although their parents were unknown)

The REST family migrated to Australia in May 1928

Any help re: the above in Germany, would be appreciated,
Thank you

Jack,
Australia

You could try looking for them in the Hamburg emigration lists:
http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/hamburg.html

Do you have everything you can get from Australia? Australia Recordsearch has some sort of naturalisation record (series A435, control symbol 1946/4/475) for a Joseph Rest b. 15 Oct 1883 (German). Also a record that lists Fred Rest, Josef Rest, Dora Rest, Mariana Rest (brother and the family?) in 1927 and one that mentions Anna Dorothea Rest who arrived in Sydney via the SS Orsova, 10 may 1928.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births
 - shows several deaths that might be this family (Joseph son of Joseph and Terace?, and Friedrich Rest, married in 1913?)
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Jack,

are you sure of the spelling for Annie von Spreckeisen. If you google "Genealogy Spreckelsen Hamburg" you will get plenty of hits. Same with Ahnenforschung.net   http://forum.ahnenforschung.net/forumdisplay.php?f=30.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year   :)

Hi Peonie

the spelling from records in Australia is Annie von Spreckelsen yes with an ' L '  misprint.  I weill check the link that you posted - many thanx and all the best for the festive season and New Year

Oops - re: the link,  it seems to be in German - I don't speak the language ---  will have to get someone I know who can understand the records etc

Hi Jack,

don't worry about the second site. All entries concerning Spreckelsen come up when you google.
There is an address book from 1847 with quite a few Spreckelsen. But nothing about Josef or Fred.
