Hi Lynne,

The man you found in Wisconsin in 1880 is shown with a wife named Catherine on the 1870 and 1860 censuses for Reedsburg, Sauk

1860
John Bates, 37, Tailor, value of personal estate 100, b. England
Catharine Bates, 31, b. Ohio
Charlotte Bates, 5, b. Wisconsin
Lucy Bates, 3, b. Wisconsin
J C Bates (male), 1, b. Wisconsin

"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

I'm afraid of no ghost

I cannot add anything to your search, but here are a few photographs of Reedsburg, in case you are curious about the area:

It appears that there are no online vital records for Wisconsin (I may be incorrect, as I quickly scanned the information!):

Wicklow/Canada       Fowley: Sligo/Canada       Furnival: Lancashire/Canada       Ibbotson: Sheffield/Canada       Lee/DeJongh: Lancashire & Cheshire       Mumford: Essex/Canada       Ovens: Ireland/Canada       Sarge: Yorkshire/Canada             Stuart: Sligo/Canada       Sullivan: Co. Clare/Canada      Vaus: Sussex/Surrey      Wakefield: Tuam or Ballinasloe, Ireland              (Surname: Originated/Place Last Lived)  (Canadians lived in Ontario)

I found the following family on the 1851 England census in Hetton le Hole, Durham:

John Bates, head, 31, pitman, born Dubmoor, Durham
Hannah Bates, wife, 26, born Benton, Northumberland
William Bates, son, 6, born Benton, Northumberland
Thomas Bates, son, 4, born Benton, Northumberland
Joseph Bates, son, 2, born Castle Eden, Durham
Jane Ann Bates, daughter, 11 months, born Benton, Northumberland
Mary Pringle, visitor, 8, born Benton, Northumberland
Piece: 2393; Folio: 373; Page: 12

I know his occupation is different but it's a possibility. I couldn't find the family after 1851.

Canada: Patterson, Brown, Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Johnston(e), Gorsuch, Kitchin/Kitchen
United States: Patterson, Smith, Brown, Vance, Bower(s), Newberry, Best, Love, Gorsuch
England (Northumberland): Brown, Whitfield, Henderson
Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, East Lothian): Johnston(e), Bell, Galloway, Campbell, Robertson, Williamson, Thomson, Crawford
Germans from Russia: Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Meach, Lorenz

I finally found Hannah on the 1861 census. Their surname was spelled Baites on the census for Wingate, Durham. Hannah says she is a widow.

Hannah Baites, head, widow, 36, born Longbenton, Northumberland
William Baites, son, 17, coal miner, born Longbenton, Northumberland
Joseph Baites, son, 12, coal miner, born Castle Eden, Durham
Jane Ann Baites, daughter, 12, born Castle Eden, Durham
Piece: 3750; Folio: 91; Page: 38

I was having difficulty isolating a birth entry in the Free BMD for any of the children. There is a entry at the LDS site (doesn't say if it was extracted or submitted) for a Jane Ann Bates who was the daughter of John and Hannah Bates who was baptised on 15 May 1850 in Monk Hesledon, Durham. There was also an extracted entry at the LDS site for the baptism of Thomas Bates, son of John and Hannah Bates on 11 Oct 1846 at Longbenton, Northumberland. Here's a possible birth for Thomas:

Thomas Bates registered 3rd quarter of 1846 in Tynemouth, Northumberland (vol XXV, pg 411)

You may want to consider checking a birth registration for one of the children to see if this is the correct family.

Germans from Russia: Haidenger/Heidinger, Meyer, Meach, Lorenz
