Service Records from zero
« on: Sunday 27 December 09 05:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I'd be interested to find some information on the WWII Service records of my grandfather and his brothers.

The family name is fairly unusual, for the British side, (SCHILLING) so names in any list tend to stick out.

I wondered if there are any resources, lists, gazettes, etc which may be searched to give regiment, number, medals, etc and help me link to the Service Records which I understand I will need to write off for.

Thanks, and seasons greetings
Mike

Hi

You might be able to request your grandfathers records via www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html.  If your grandmother is still alive then she could do it or your mother/uncles if not.  Might also apply to your great uncles if you are the only living relatives...

Another place to try is the online free historical search of the London Gazette.  If they were officers or if they received any medals it will help you get their service numbers.  It is a bit of a rigmarole sometimes and you need to use all variations on a theme and then might not find it till you try another time but worth a try....

Hi

They will eventually release the records publicly but because so many veterans are still alive I think they feel impelled to keep them secret.  That applies to the officers aswell.  You may be lucky and find your rellies in the London Gazette even I have an entry in there for my long service and good conduct....

Good luck in the new year in getting somewhere and let us know how you are doing.
