If they married in Ireland- civil registration of Catholic marriages started in 1864 so for earlier dates it means searching for existing church records. Details in church records do vary so it will depend on church/period/clergyman as to what details like parents' are shown but often only fathers' names listed.

As they were born in different areas of Ireland it's possible they met in Scotland.

If they married in Scotland- Scotland's People would be the place to search- see their website for coverage of marriage records.

If they had any children (listed in Scottish census records, etc.) it might give an indication as to when and where they married.

Have you carried out a search on the IFHF site yet?

If you have, then you may already know that an Arthur Hughes was baptised in the RC church in Dundalk in 1833 - could this be him?

(Don't be too hung up about your information saying he was born in 1831 - that date might have come from the census, his marriage/death certificate - in any case to most people, what's a year or 10 between friends? Unless money is involved!!!!)
