Hi Brian

Yes it is. Barvas is a parish on the North West of Lewis  :)

I am helping a cousin John McRitchie who lives in Australia to trace his family origins, which are on the Isle of Lewis. I have to say that I did not realise that I would find so many McRitchie McLean and Morrison names.

Johns great grandfather Angus McRitchie b. abt 1846 at Barvas Married Mary Mclean 21 dec 1871, I have followed them on the 1881 census but on the 1891 Angus is not there.
I have found a death of an Angus 1885 aged 36 and the district is given as Marine Register, does this mean he was lost at sea.
and 2nd question, if so, is there a memorial/commemoration book at Barvas to those lost at sea.

I'm not sure about a memorial book but an entry in the marine register does mean he died at sea.

His parents' names would be shown on his marriage cert which will be on the Scotland's People site  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Thanks Gadget,
Yes I have his marriage details/parents. He was a fisherman and it was quite common for loss of life in those days, often communities commemorate these tradgedies in some way (even old photographs), that is what I was looking for. Or any information as to what happened

Gadget,
From the cert you sent, I notice that the entry above, No37 is for Donald Murray in what is obviously the same accident, is there anyone else on the previous page
