Hello Margaret, and welcome to Rootschat.

Interesting photo. Is it on glass? Could we wee the whole thing please, uncropped?

If it's a glass photo, chances are it was done between 1855 and 1865. It would be better if we could see all of the edges. However, the people on the Armed Forces board are much better at uniforms than we are, so you might consider putting a link there, or one of us could do it.

Cheers,
China

Thank you so much for your quick response and for your welcome, and for making it clearer.  See my reply to the next helper for why the photo is such poor quality.

Thanks for your quick response, and your welcome.  In short, the story of the photo is: it was handed down by someone who we think was the son of the one men, but the original has been lost, and only this copy remains.  I posted it because my cousin who has more information was unable to upload the photo to RootsChat. She is in Canada and I am in Australia!   I will ask what she knows about the original.  We are trying to work out who the men could be, as we think they are our great grandfathers, but there is a tight time-frame in their lives when it could have been taken.  1850s it would need to be, if our theory is correct.
I asked the Armed Forces board about the Hannibal, but didn't know how to get a photo to them. Please could you put in a link to the Armed Forces board, as I don't know how yet. Thanks again
cheers

Judging by the hairstyle, I'd say it could well be 1850s.

If you scroll up to the top of this page, you'll see a line of buttons. Click on the Welcome button on the left, which will take you to the page with all the various boards at this forum. The Armed Forces board is listed.

Start a new topic there, and say there is a picture on the Photo board which would benefit from their attention. You might copy the URL at the top of your browser on the page with the photo, and paste it into your new message...it's easier than reposting the picture there as you would have to change its filename.

To send someone a PM, click on the little green scrolly thing under their user name.

Cheers,
China

Hello China.(?) Millie here. I think you did a fine job on the photo of the 2 sailors.
The picture came from my uncle who said it was "grandma's brothers." but that wasn't possible. One brother was too young and the 2nd, born in Wales died ca. age 10. Had he said his grandfathers brothers, it would have made more sense.
There were no markings on the Carte Ce Visite. I originally  thought it was glass too, but after looking closer, I thought albumen. It seems to be dried and cracked and the edges of the cracks were more or less rolled back. Other than the sailor on the right also had a beard like the one on the left.
But it's really not important. I
m very pleased how well it has shown!
Thank you so much.
Millie Wolff

Ah, Millie :)

I'm going to ask Prue to have a look, she's a professional conservator and knows much about various types of photos. She's away from home at the moment so it may take a little while before she drops in.

Meanwhile, we'll see if anybody from the military board has an opinion.

Cheers,
China (name's really China :))

Sorry. I forgot that when I first studied the photo, I enlarged it and I thought the name on the hats were Slavic. My husband suggested I revere it, then we could see it was HMS Hannibal. So the picture was a reverse. Daizie?
