New to the area and after some help - Hughes/Hobley/Hobly >
« on: Tuesday 29 December 09 12:50 GMT (UK) »
Have just found out that my gt x 5 grandparents were born in Peterchurch (Edwin Hughes circa 1822), and Byford (Maryann Hobley/Hobly circa 1822 - two variants of her surname are noted on the marriage records - not got the cert yet to clarify anything further as I have only ordered it this morning).

I've not had any luck locating them on the 1841 census, but the details of the 1851 census onwards are on the following posting on this site: -http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,426191.0.html

The marriage record shows Hay, but I believe this district may have straddled the two counties, so I'm unsure whether they married in Hay (where they later lived) or in one of their towns/villages instead.

I was just curious as to whether:
a) anyone has come across the names in their research, or
b) if someone could point me towards the relevant parish records to follow this up further once I have the marriage cert

Many thanks in advance for your time

p.s. if anyone does happen to find the relevant 1841 census returns, I really wouldn;t mind if you posted them - honestly ;)

Hi Sheepy,

1841 census - one for you to consider for Edwin is HO107 piece 1370 book/folio 18/6 page 4 - Hay, Brecknockshire.  Edwin is listed as not being born in county, occupation is mason

Ah - thanks for that. I'm sure Ancestry just likes to give me the runaround  ::)

I don't suppose you've got the details of who else he's listed with at all? Am in work at the moment, and can't view it until I get home again later

Thanks (and sorry for being so cheeky!)

No probs, actually I had difficulty finding them on ancestry, so ended up using FindMyPast  ::)

I'm not too good on the writing, but it looks like the parish is Llanigon, Hay, Brecknockshire

Troedyrhew
Charles Pritchard  47  Mason
Esther Pritchard  47
Edwin Hughes  20 Mason
William Pritchard  11
Esther Hughes  22

Only William born in county

Thanks for that - I'll have to have a good dig at home for them then.

No idea who these other people are, but here's hoping that Esther is a family member!

Thanks for all you help

Oh fantastic! The marriage record (handwritten) shows entries for Hobley and Hobly, so possibly the person updating the record may have been unable to read the original recording of the name.

Like I say, am waiting on the actual cert to confirm, but I suspect that you may have cracked this one for me.

And I don't suppose you know what F.S. stands for on the 1841 census though do you, or am I just being really thick  ???
