Whereabouts of Stocks Lodge, Wavertree - 1848 Death Cert.
« on: Monday 14 March 05 09:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Would anybody know the location of "Stocks Lodge", Wavertree.  I've just this morning received a death certificate for 1848, which gives this as the place of death.  It also seems to give the number 240 before Stocks Lodge.  Does anywhere with this address survive today in the area?
Any ideas?
Best wishes,
Keith

Hi, Paul,
Thanks for giving my query some thought - I'll send the Wavertree Society an e-mail of my own on the subject, and hope it brings them to life, so yours gets answered as well.
Best wishes,
Keith

Hi Keith,

Checked again for you on the 1908 map in detail and in an old A-Z but nothing at all.  I know that there was an old lodge on the site of what became Wavertree playground (Park), that may be worth a poke about, failing which can I ask if the original spelling etc is clear or is there room for interpretation ?

Let me know if I can help more.

all the best

Thanks again, Paul,
There is no other interpretation of the address as far as I can see.  I've already e-mailed the Wavertree Society (if they don't know, then surely nobody will!), and I'll try that other message board you mention.

Paul,
Just to say that I've received a very helpful reply to my query to the Wavertree Society from Mike Chitty who has written at least one excellent book about Wavertree.  Even he is not quite certain about Stocks Lodge, but he has made a perfectly reasonable suggestion.
Do hope you soon get a response from them yourself about your own matter.

And now an embarrassing confesssion to make about all this.  A friend of mine has just called round (someone whose faculties obviously are somewhat brighter than mine are); he's taken one look at the certificate in question and pronounced that "2 40 The Stocks Lodge" in fact reads: "2 40 p m Stocks Lodge.  The "p m" did so look like a cursive "the".
But at least the situation is more clear, and Stocks Lodge seems to be the Lodge that Mike Chitty suggests - it's certainly there in the 1851 Census under its proper name...
