Allen family COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 31 December 09 01:00 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my GGGrandparents. On their sons birth cert. in Victoria Aust, they list as Richard Allen born Reading in 1829 married to Maria Neale, born in Newbury around 1837. The certificate lists them married in December at we think is West or East Ilsley. This is quite hard to read as it has been smudged. The birth cert. lists 3 deceased children, Clara, George, Charles. Not known if these children died before they left for Australia. Two children Esther approx 1853, and Robert approx 1859 born before Henry Joseph who we know was born here in 1862. Dont know if Richard was married before or not. Hoping someone can shed a little light on them. Occupation is listed as Brickmaker (Richard).COMPLETED

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

This is the only birth I can find in Berkshire

Births June qtr 1851

Esther Sophia Allen   Newbury  6 232

Looking at the 1851 census there is a Richard Allen aged 24 b Hurley Berks with wife Sophia aged 20 so I suspect they were the parents of the above Esther.  They are also on the 1861 census and do not have a son Robert so wrong family

Thanks for trying. They are proving difficult to track down easily, but then I didn't think I would get this far. I am a novice at this family history thing and didn't think I would even find out which family came to Australia let alone put a name to them. :)

Hi

I have checked the 1841 and 1851 censuses but there is no Richard Allen or Maria Neale who fit your profile.  There is no marriage on freebmd for a couple with those names

There is only one birth for a Clara Allen in Berkshire that would fit the timescale - 1859 Clara Bonner Allen but there is no death recorded for her prior to 1862

Although Richard and Maria may have been born in Berkshire - their children may have been born elsewhere

There's no marriage for Richard Allen & Maria Neale in East Ilsley PRs.

I only have the BFHS disc for West Ilsley which only has marriages to 1839.  There is a banns entry for a Maria Neale (otp) in November 1850, but the groom is Charles Dobson of Chieveley.

Looking through a magnifier it could also be West Ilsley or it could be something different altogether. The writing is very bad so I am taking what I can recognise and guessing

Hi,

Sorry to say that there is no marriage of Richard Allen to Maria Neale in the West Ilsley PRs, which go up to 1899,

The town definitely ends in ......sley though and Berkshire after it on the certificate, but I am learning that not all papers are accurate.
