Elizabeth Ann Maughan d. 1937 Newcastle

Hello Rootschatters! I am getting ready to do the happy dance -- perhaps!!    The freeBMD index has just posted a death that could very possibly be my great aunt...the details are Elizabeth A. Maughan died March Qtr 1937 at age 74 in Newcastle per the new entry......My Elizabeth Ann (nee:King) Maughan was born in 1867 and not 1863 as the entry reports, HOWEVER, it is close enough time-wise and in the area where she reportedly last lived.  Before I purchase yet another wrong certificate, can anyone check with the Newcastle Library and see if her death is listed there....an obit may give the name of her husband, John Salem Maughan OR some nieces an nephews who are also long gone...they had no children.. At least I could determine if this is when she died. Thank you kindly. Happy new year, too! Pat

Don't waste money getting the wrong one.  Your New Year's resolution should be to contact the local office and ask them to check details before you buy.  Usually they do not charge - unlike the GRO!

 Newcastle United football team are top of their league.
 The same cannot be said for Newcastle Register Office. Nuf sed !

But their neighbours in the Newcastle Civic Centre, Newcastle Bereavement Services, are very helpful.

Above views formed from my own experience with both organisations.

 Hang on a few days and  I will look up death notice in Evening Chronicle in Newcastle City Library.

 A thousand apologies--- my terrible memory ( Yes I know I should make notes about " Things to Find"... and I do make them- but then cannot find them)

Anyway I was in Newcastle Library this pm.  For some eras, of the Evening Chronicle, one can choose either film or hard copy. However 1937 editions are only accessible through film... and guess what the spanking brand new library only has 6 filmreaders- and everyone in use ( I wonder if Her Majesty and Prince Philip were aware of this poor show when they opened the place ! )

But will make another attempt at less busier time e.g. late afternoon.


With the death sometime within the March Qtr 1937 ( 1st Jan-31st March) I will have to browse  about 70 editions for the death notice.   I will manage it, but it might take some time.
