Hi all,

Was looking at the resources board and found the link to the Victoria Government Gazette.

So, being ever curious, I did a search for my principal interests, STANNARD, and found the attached entry for Robert James STANNARD, on p 4877 of the 1908 Victoria Government Gazette (http://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/view.cgi?year=1908&class=general&page_num=4877&state=V&classNum=G117&searchCode=561011)

All well and fine, except that my g-grandfather, Robert James STANNARD was apparently living in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa at the time...  All his children (except possibly one) were born there, starting with my grandfather in 1902, with the last child being born in 1911...I am aware that the children being born in Pietermaritzburg doesn't actually require the presence of their father :)

That said, I am a bit puzzled as to why he would have had a, by all accounts successful life in South Africa since approx 1901, and have taken the time to return to Australia to assign his effects to Horace Edgar Wootton in 1908.

In all my searches in Victoria, I've not found a mention of another Robert James Stannard, so I'm pretty sure this is my guy, but it just doesn't make sense...

Ideas anyone?

Regards,

Patricia

There are a number of references to this on the National Library digitised newspapers site

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

I searched using "Hawthorn steam joinery' and again with "Robert James Stannard".

Although it gives an address for him I would think he may not have needed to be in Victoria in person to assign his estate to the lawyers?  I would have thought, though, that the notice should have said "formerly of ..., Hawthorn"

I cannot see him on the electoral roll for 1903 in Hawthorn (which really proves nothing but at least shows the person may not have been in Victoria at the time).

Hi Patricia
I came across Robert James STANNARD being born in Warrnambool Vic in 1870 died 1917 Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
http://family.incoll.org/getperson.php?personID=I5177&tree=LMIncell
As he was born in Victoria he may have had relatives who left him the business and he wound up the estate via Horace Edgar, Wootton, trustee
Those with more understanding of these things may be able to help

Hi there,

Thanks for the ideas, I'll consider carefully - maybe one day I'll find the answer to this one; although I think the most likely one is that he'd decided to stay in Pietermaritzburg and sent instructions to 'wind up' his assets in Victoria!

Regards,

Patricia
