When did George Jackson die?
« on: Friday 01 January 10 18:21 GMT (UK) »
My gt gt grandather George Jackson was born abt 1831 in Macclesfield in Cheshire
In 1851 he and his wife Sally were with parents still in Cheshire, in Marple.
By 1861, George was settled in Dodworth, Yorkshire, staying with the Lomases who may be relatives.
Sally and the first two surviving children are still in Marple

George is at this date a coal viewer. This is apparently a senior position in the mine.

At 1871 They are living in North Royd, Dodworth. George is now described as a Colliery Steward
Now I know Sally died in August 1872, and was buried in Dodworth on 14th August 1872.

George has died by 1881 but is definitley not buried in Dodworth.
I found one other reference to him in his grandson's George Jackson Williams' obituary in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour. George was referred as a mining engineer

I would love either to find more about George or at least to know where or when he died

Bob, To ask you the very obvious question- have to searched for him on freebmd? :-[

If you were to discover him there then you'd know when/where he died- and the where might give a clue to his place of burial etc.

two possible from freebmd the last more likely
JACKSON    George    39    Barnsley    9c   111
Jackson    George    48    Barnsley    9c   89

There is a third but he is ten years to old

And that is assuming he stayed in the dodworth barnsley area

Unfortunately Jackson is not a rare name and it has not been possible to pin down his death

Also note that one remaining daughter is living in the same house with a family relative wrongly described as mother in 1881.

He could of course have died anywhere

Bob,

Using the two details I have given you above you could email the Barnsley registry office and ask them to check the register for you and see if the daughter was the informant.  Just give them the details above and the daughters name.  I have done this at a number of different registry offices and always been given a basic yes or no answer.

Alternatively let me have the daughters name and I will do it for you

I eventually did find his burial at Dodworth and have his death cert which shows that he was a Colliery manager in Carlton, and died from Bright's disease (kidney problem)
