Workhouse Discharge - Can't read it
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 10:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello All

Can someone help me read this discharge reason from the Workhouse in Berkshire in 1837?

I can read most of it... To look for work because I wd not pay '9 for ..... and then the line that is cut off reads 'her conduct having been bad.'

And what does '9 mean? A monetary amount?

I think it says "9d for a letter" - the "d" is that funny little mark immediately above the 9.

I think it could read:

'To look for work because T. wd not pay.....'

Presumably, 'T' is the initial of the person in question.

"9d for a letter". I don't think it was letter via mail.
Perhaps it was what we today call a reference.
T wanted to look for work, but the workhouse would not let people come and go to do so. It was after all a business.

The workhouse was definitely not a business - it was paid for, and often resented, by local ratepayers and the fewer who were in there the better as far as they were concerned. Anyone who had work to go to would not stay in the workhouse a moment more than was absolutely necessary.

Ok, judging by what you all have told me, it says:

'To look for work because T. wd not pay 9d for a letter, her conduct having been bad'

Thanks all, but I am still confused as to who T. is?
