County Down 1871 Census
« on: Monday 04 January 10 00:45 GMT (UK) »
Do any records exist of the County Down Census for 1871?
I am searching for John and Mary Doran with children John Doran b.circa 1867 and Elizabeth
b.circa 1869 ( probably more children, but names not known)
I am fairly confident this family were in County Down 1871 but could possibly be elsewhere in Ireland.
Any help appreciated!
Kind regards
Alyson

Have moved your post from IRELAND RESOURCES to Co. DOWN board.
1871 Irish census completely destroyed by government order after population figures were extracted.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The census was not designed for genealogical research but for recording information about the inhabitants of the country. The government wanted to know things like how many males/females (and their ages, religion) in each townland, etc. not details like whether or not Mary Kelly was a widow with 6 children under the age of ten.

Hi Otto,
Thankyou so much for taking the trouble to find this information, I'm not sure as this is my John and Mary as I have been told by a relative that Mary's maiden name was
Savage......... never the less I am still going to check this out as relatives are known to be wrong. Did you notice any Doran/Savage unions in your search?
Kindest regards and much appreciation.

Hi Alyson,

I happened to mention this to my sister earlier as her fella is a Savage from Loughinisland in Co.Down which is 2 miles from Downpatrick. In turn she spoke to his dad who says that his Savages married Dorans way back. He is very interested and is to get back to us with what he knows ASAP.
Will keep you updated.

Regards
