Armathwaite..
« on: Monday 04 January 10 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I know there are other posts on here about Armathwaite, my maternal Grandfather was born there 18.3.1880, which leads me to ask what was the labour situation at that time in Armathwaite.??
Recent ariel pictures, show a small community with a church, a castle (large house) and a few houses, one would assume the place was smaller still in those olden days. Grandfather ended up a Hussar and vet, specialising in horses, so maybe that was a scheme of his father, who knows. So what was the work/labour requirement in 1880 Armathwaite, I don't know, does anyone else..??

His father was a victualler and innkeeper in Carlisle before that, so why move out there ??
The name was Harker.

Hi Barley Manor

I don't think it was amazingly different then, apart from now there are quite a few modern houses as well and for some people it is a dormitory village for Carlisle and for Penrith .

Also some people live in this area who travel becouse it is close to the motorway north and south and the A66 roadsm east to west, also  the railway.

Could he not have become an innkeeper or similar in Armathwaite?

Best wishes

That is a distinct possibility, that he should man a inn of some sort, are there any there now, or was there then in the 1880's ??
I don't know about commuting in them thar' days, horse and cart was the only probable transport, other than by river. maybe a grocer shop for victualling ??
It's hard to pin down precisely what was going on, and when they moved out, the search continues.
thanks.

Hi Barley Manor

There were many more inns and also alehouses., as well as businesses to support the village and farmers.  There were a few inns in Armathwaite once, I'm not so sure at that stage.  There was still a village shop last time I was there.  In the past, the proprietor &/or wife/ husband often took on ore than onbe area of work.

I'll see what I can see, but have you looked on the census for 1881?

Best wishes

Hi Barley Manor

Looks like what Linda says bears ot the theory!

Nearest directory I've got is1901, and by then, the named victuallers were:

Fish Inn, (Douglas Henry)
Duke's Head, (Thomas Grierson)

Of course there would quite probably be other people licensed to sell ales in their houses.

I've used licensing records for this area and they're fascinating, because they give the licensee and the seconder and where they werew for the application and they're annual so you can see when someone moves, but they were for an earlier date.  I don't know what survives fopr this date.

Best wishes

How wonderful to see it all in print, thankyou so verily muchly, yes this is the family for sure. The head was a Francis Colquahoun Harker, and the one year old was my grandfather, Harry Musgrave Harker, the others I have not a clue about, but will now try and find out. How exciting, thanks again.
For a small parish, the extent of labour forces is quite staggering, almost not enough time to start a family.....
Well that's me tied up for about a year thanks to you, cheers

 A previous generation, perhaps?
Francis Harker married Hannah Colquhoun at Arthuret in 1809 - in the parish register at the baptisms of his children he was described as Mail Coach Driver.
cheers
