Cadman family of north London
« on: Monday 04 January 10 14:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to track down the family of my late mother. I never met my maternal grandparents. My mother's maiden name was Margery Maud Cadman (b. 02-12-10) believed to have lived in Tottenham, north London probably within a triangular area of Bruce Grove, Broad Lane and Tottenham Hale during the period 1910-30 (approximately). I was never told by her the christian names of her parents.

All I know is that her father allegedly served in World War One possibly at Dardanelles (Turkey) which he survived and that his occupation was a "Journeyman Balloonist" with Short Brothers (now Short Brothers and Harland) then manufacturers of Aerial Balloons and early aircraft. Although I can be by no means certain, the roads: Tynemouth Road and Antill Road, Tottenham, London N.15 may possibly have been where my mother's parents lived although I may have heard mention of these two roads in some other connection.  My mother attended Page Green School, at or near Bruce Grove, Tottenham.
My mother had two siblings: a sister, Lucy, aged about 5 years her junior and an even younger half-sister, Ethel.
This is about the extent of my knowledge of my mother's family and, therefore, any information about them would be greatly appreciated.

Geoff Ambridge

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

The best starting point would be a copy of your mothers birth cert as that would give her parents names and mothers maiden name.  because she was born in Secember  her birth was only registered after the New Year so falls in the first quarter of 1911

Using the free 1911 index - she is shown as MARGRY M aged 3 mths living in Islington and mother appears to be MANDY aged 23.  No others of surname Cadman in household

Hi it may be worth starting with Lucy as she was born 5 years after Margery this would give a mother's maiden name and then you should re-trace from Margery's birth going backward all Cadman and (maiden) marriages in area x good luck

I think the 1911 transcription is incorrect and should be Maud in which case this would be her parents marriage

Maud Bradford

Births December qtr 1916

My mother had two siblings: a sister, Lucy, aged about 5 years her junior and an even younger half-sister, Ethel

That would make Lucy b 1905 (ish) and Ethel even earlier and neither children show up on the 1911 index in the same household

There is no other Margery Cadman b 1910/1911 in the London area other than the one I found

Is it possible that either her mother or father re-married and that Lucy and Ethel were step sisters rather than half sisters
