You wonder why you do this when ......
« on: Monday 14 March 05 23:26 GMT (UK) »
You manage to find the wifes maiden name and can go back three generations in a day but can't you find the spouses parents for love nor money.......

The BMD lists the spouse but they haven't got round to the wife!

You think your family all came from the same area then found they moved here BEFORE the 1971 census and the never told the enumerator their correct place of birth!

They lie more about their age than you do!

You wake up each morning and hope Ancestry have finally got the 1861 census online!

Or you have died and gone to heaven and they have actually got round the the 1851 census

You discover that everyone in Tibberton with the surname Colley is descended from your GGGGrandad Edward but he might as well have been dropped on the planet by aliens because you can't find out where he was born!!!

You just know the IGI has listed everyone with the surname you are researching but the one you desperately need!

Everyone in Droitwich is called John Harris and they must have had a power cut on the night he was conceived!

Your are the only one who is happy that the in laws came to visit on the night they took the census

That the postman DELIBERATELY misses your house when you are waiting for that vital document from the GRO.........

You can remember the name of your Great Grandfathers mother but can't remember the name of the person who your talking to on the phone!

Why everyone with the surname Nash has vanished from Ledbury by 1871

You take two days off work to get some jobs done around the house but you found your GGGGGrandmothers maiden name and now you need to take some more time off work to get the jobs done.......

That there was some reason you started this hobby!

The reason you started this Hobby is because you wanted to

 1  Lose sleep.
2  Bash your head against a brick wall.
3  Lose your hair/turn grey quicker.
4  Worry (that you are following the right family).
5  Walk round grave yards in pouring rain.
6  Spend hours in archives up and down the country

But most of all .....you enjoy it.....the thrill......the excitement ..., more so when you have been searching for a couple of years for an ancestor and suddenly there they are.

LMAO

Do you think its a new disease we should warn the medical council about?

We could invent a wonderful Latin name for it

Ancestrous dementia?
Brickwall stubbornness?
Past obsessional?
Census mania with delusions of family tree completion?

They lie more about their age than you do!

I can cope with them lying about their age - it's ggrandma Helen and ggrandma Harriet lying about their names and their mythical marriages which really gives me grief!

I think we are probably the main source of amusement on the other side and they are taking bets on if you ever find that elusive relly that is avoiding you  ;D

 ;D ;D ;D

Nice one, Willow!

Maybe there's something deep inside some of us (who have a certain genetic composition) that drives the desire to know 'where we come from'?
Possibly in a few years hence they'll discover the gene for genealogy, and trace it back to some poor illegitimate soul in the 5th century, who has passed on this crazy longing to all future generations.  He'll probably be called John Smith.

cheers

Paul
