It's all a little complicated!
By the time the 1841 census was taken Sarah Curtis had married James Gough. The family record in the 1841 census shows James Gough, Sarah Gough, Fredrick Gough (4) and Job Gough (1).
My interest is in the family line of Job. But I am using Fredrick to find the first name of the man (Curtis) Sarah married before James Gough.
For all later records of Job after the 1841 census, he is listed as Job Curtis. So you can see him in the 1851 census as Job Curtis living with James Gough and Ann Gough. Job is "misrecorded" as grandson. Sarah has disappeared from the family unit, along with Fredrick by 1851.
I have Job's birth certificate of 12 October 1839 where he has the surname Curtis taken from his mother. No father is recorded. Sarah is listed as a Sarah Curtis, a widow with the maiden name Stockham.
Sarah Curtis marries James Gough, 5 months after the birth of Job. This may be evidence that James is Job's father. This is further supported because the person who registered Job's birth is Joanna Gough, who I suspect is James' mother.
However it would be useful to know if there is a death record of Sarah's husband named Curtis, and if so, the date of death, so that I can discount him as the father of Job. This would establish that the family name may be Curtis but the bloodline may well be Gough. To do this I need the first name of the man Curtis. I hoped to get this through the baptism record of Fred(e)rick, the older brother of Job, who could be his child during the marriage with Sarah.
Of course, the other way I could tackle this, is by finding the marriage of Sarah Stockham to the man Curtis. Because the dates of this search would be much wider, I assumed the baptism search would be easier.
As I said, it's complicated!
