Broach/Broatch
« on: Friday 08 January 10 23:27 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering if anybody knows anything about George Broach who was born abt 1818 in Dumfires.  His father was James also and was a blacksmith, but i dont know who his Mother was.  on one of the census returns it has that he was born in a place with the name something like Kirkamerlie.

Thanks

Hi

Without seeing the censuse that you refer to, it sounds as if it is Kirkmahoe or possibly Kirkmichael. Map of the Dumfriesshire parishes here:

The only George Br*ch showing  on SP is George Broatch baptised 30 Jan 1821, Kirkpatrick Fleming.  Parents are given as William Broatch and Jean Marshall.

Can't see any others in Dumfriesshire around then :-\

I have looked at the census return and it looks more like Kirkamerlie the census is RG 12 131 pg 38 he is a retired melter living in St Pancras.

I have a copy of his Marriage Cert to Hannah Tomlinson from 9/5/1853 and it states his father as James Broach occupation Blacksmith, the people wo whitnessed the marriage is James and Sophia Broach, James i believe is Georges older Brother, because in later census's he is stated as being born abt 1817

thanks for the full reference.
My only problem with the Broach's is that without knowing his actual year of birth i dont think that i could get a Birth Cert for George.

Your problem is really that there were only baptism records (mainly Church of Scotland)  until Jan 1855 and not all survive.

Have you tried looking for a James, Blacksmith, on the 1841?   Freecen does cover Dumfriesshire.

I've found a James Broatch, a blacksmith, aged 41 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire on the 1841.  Wife is Elizabeth, aged 33 - maybe a second wife  :-\

You should be able to get it from Freecen
