Carrick in Auchinloch/Kirkintilloch
« on: Monday 11 January 10 08:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm at a brick wall with my 3x great grandfather, William Carrick, born Auchinloch/Kirkintilloch area c1810-20. He's listed as a carter/ag lab/fisherman in various places and moved about quite a bit with his family.

I have no birth or death certificate for him. The only clues I have about him are a marriage register (in Glenmavis 1838), just one census (1851) and, a parochial aid application made by his wife years after he'd died stating he was born in Auchinloch.  But I've been unable to find potential parent's for him in the area, or any other Carrick's for that matter.

Any idea's what I could try?
Regards
Ann

Hi Ann,

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you looked at any of the deaths of William Carricks in Scotland between 1855-1860?

If you haven't, maybe by a process of elimination, rather than check through them all, you might strike lucky?

Yes, been through them with a fine tooth comb, none are him on SP. By a process of elimination, and a comment on the parochial aid application form in 1872 that 'he died 20 years ago", it seems he died somewhere between 1850 (when his last child was born) and 1855, when stat regs were introduced. I waited patiently for the OPR's to be added to SP, but he doesn't appear to be in them either. And I can't seem to find any other Carrick's in the area around Auchinloch or Glenmavis who may have been even remotely related.

As I said, brick wall  :'(

the 1851 census(if i have the right one/freeCEN) of rothesay bute gives
his age as 21
flora - wife is 37 , and oldest child hugh is 11
so actual age may be 31 or 41  :-\

No, it's actually 41, just poorly written. He couldn't have been 21 or he'd have had his first child when he was 11. That's them though.
