Patterson connection
« on: Thursday 14 January 10 06:51 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather Thomas Maguire (1782-1867) married Lucy Patterson (1806-1875) in 1820 according to the Diocese of Clogher Marriage License Bonds.

I know that Lucy had a brother William.  He emigrated with them in 1847 to Canada from Londonderry.  Residence before embarkation was Blacklion.  Presumably Thomas’ residence.

I have found an LDS record with a Lucy (born 1808) and a William Patterson (born 1794) with siblings John (1790), Edward (1792), Frances (1798), Daniel (1800), Anne (1804), and Margaret (1806).  This record suggests the impossible scenario of John Sr. and Margaret (both born 1832) having these children starting in their 58th year, and having their last at age 76.   The children’s place of birth is noted as “Millbrook, Sligo”.  The townland of Millbrook shows up on the townland database as Co. Donegal, Kilmacrenan barony, Killygarven parish, Millford PLU.  There does appear to be a modern area of Sligo town called Millbrook.

This Lucy (of the LDS record) shows in another area as born in 1804 to the same parents, in Millbrook Sligo.  And in a third record as being married in Rathmelton, Donegal, Kilmacrenan, Aughnish, Millford in 1818.  There is no indication of who she married.

In summary, I have three names that match: Thomas Maguire and Lucy and William Patterson.  Lucy’s birthdate is close: 1804, 1806, or 1808.  Lucy’s marriage date is close: 1818 or 1820.  Neither of these Millbrooks, nor Rathmelton appear to be anywhere near the Diocese of Clogher.

Question 1:  Whose children were Lucy, William, John, Edward, Frances, Daniel, Anne, and Margaret?

Question 2:  Where were they really born?  “Millbrook, Sligo” or Millbrook Donegal?

Question 3:  Who did this Lucy Patterson marry?

Question 4:  Is this a futile search?

Thanks

Carl

Are LDS records submitted or extracted?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The LDS records were submitted, unfortunately with the glaring error about the family (first record), which casts some doubt upon the second- Lucy's birth- and the third- Lucy's marriage.

Are you sure that William emigrated to Canada in 1847? Is it possible that he went in the 1820's and Lucy followed later?  If so, do you know where he settled in Canada?

Thank you for your response.  Yes, William Patterson was on the same J&J Cooke ticket with Thomas and Lucy (Patterson) Maguire purchased July 7 1847, sailed July 13, 1847, arrived Quebec 15 Sept 1847.
Maguires settled in Toronto, but the exact year is unclear.  I haven't pursued William Patterson.  Perhaps I should.
Do you have Patterson connections in Canada?  If so I'd like to hear about them.

Yes, William Patterson was my gg grandfather.  His dob was reported as 1799 but that has yet to be confirmed. No info available on place of birth or parents names.    Unfortunately, he emigrated to Canada in the early 1820's and settled in Eastern Ontario.  He married a girl (Margaret Barriger) in Canada around 1828 and they had 11 children, one of which was named Lucy.  Other names were Margaret, Gordon, Alexander, Charlotte, Sophia, John, William, Walter, James, Richard, and Elizabeth. Oldest son was named "William Francis" and second daughter was called "Charlotte Isabella" which may be useful in determining the most likely names of parents.

If any of this rings bells for you, please let me know.  Also would be greatful for any info you can share on your Canadian connections in case I can identify a link to other Patterson's in my area.

Gerry

The only other Patterson I've found so far in my line is John (Paterson may be with only one T) who married my grandfather's sister Lucy Maria Maguire on September 17, 1879.  Apparently he died young at age 40 or 41.  Not sure where the marriage took place, presumably in Ontario.  I'll have a closer look to see if I have any more info.

I have established that in 1820 my Pattersons were resident in Fermanagh, parish of Cleenish, in the townlands of Cleggan, Drumawillen, and/or Dornagagh.  If anyone has Patterson connections that might be related to the above, please check my posts on the Fermanagh forum.
Thanks for following this search.
