George Luffman footman Belvoir castle
« on: Saturday 16 January 10 18:48 GMT (UK) »
My attention has been drawn to a newspaper cutting from 1897 to the effect the "George Luffman former footman at Belvoir castle was sued for breach of promise and Reading assizes ordered him to pay £60 for the broken engagement". Clearly the only census when he might have been at Belvoir is 1891, does anyone have access to this census for Belvoir castle please, and if so, would they provide detail of George if present? Thanks.

George Luffman does not appear to be at Belvoir Castle in 1891, I could find 4 footmen - Frederick Smith, Edward Cousin, Alfred Nixon and William Drove, but no George - sorry  :(

What I have found is a George Luffman ( aged 19) b. Bodenham, Wiltshire, working with a William Luffman (aged 28) b. Bodenham, Wiltshire, both  employed as Domestic Footmen at Wellbury,  (in the parish of Offley) Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Census 1891  RG12/1108.  May be no connection ( especially if the newspaper article said Belvoir Castle - long way from Hertfordshire) but I thought worth a mention.

Kind Regards

Angie

The same George Luffman is residing in Reading, Berkshire . 1901
Census RG13/1153/F17
63 & 64 Friar Street, St Giles, Reading, Berkshire
Luffman Charles. 34. Head. Publican. b. Bodenham, Wiltshire
Luffman Emily. 35. Wife b. York, Yorkshire
Luffman Elsie. 5. Daughter. b. York, Yorkshire
Luffman Annie. 3. Daughter. b. Reading, Berkshire
Luffman George. 31. Brother. Barman. b. Bodenham, Wiltshire
Luffman Harry. 29. Borther. Billiard Maker. b. Bodenham, Wiltshire

Sorry if it is completely the wrong family; seems a coincidence that George was tried by Reading Aziz and there he is 3 years later (if it is your chap)!

Angie, This looks like the right guy. Though all Luffman's are believed to come from a single root as there are only about 550 in the country I do not think that this George Luffman is a near relative. My particular interest was due to the connection at Belvoir Castle, and its relative closeness to Lincolnshire where mine immediate ancestors lived. It does seem as though this George was a professional footman working with a variety of landed families. The 1891 census was the only one if any that i was going to get him at Belvoir Castle, but thanks again.
