surname RAINEY - records from Hillsborough
« on: Tuesday 15 March 05 23:43 GMT (UK) »

Hello from Australia.  I am searching for ancestors and descendants of one Thomas Rainey who was a tailor in Belfast in Alberts bridge road.  Thomas and his wife Selena ?? had a son named Thomas also.

Thomas junior was noted to have been born circa 1874 at Hillsborough in Northern Ireland and dying in 1955 in England where he was a Tailor in Saville Row.  According to these dates he would have been 81 years of age.

On searching the records I found a Thomas Rainey who died in England at a place called Hendon in 1955 and he was aged 70.  If this was the case he would have been born in 1885.

His wife Mabel Augusta Rainey (nee Thompson/nee Plass) died in Hendon also in 1985.

It is noted that the family came from a place called Knock.

I am hoping that someone can assist in locating older records for Thomas Senior .

Over and out from OZ
Lesley

Hei Lesley,

How is it that  Mabel Augusta Rainey (nee Thompson/nee Plass) is nee Thompson and nee Plass. Are we considering a reincarnation ? nee usually means born.
If she had been married previously I think the term is aka.

Why was Thomas Jnr born in Hillsborough when his father was a tailor on the Albertbridge Road ? I could understand a Knock connection with that but not a Hillsborough connection.

What family came from Knock ?

Mabel Augusta Rainey was born Mabel Augusta PLASS.  She married Herbert Thompson in England and he died during the 2nd World War.  She then married Thomas Rainey (the son born circa 1874) .
I have no idea how come Thomas junior was born in Hillsborough if his father was working as a Tailor in Belfast.  I was not around then!!
I have been told that a sister Selena Rainey lived in Knock. She never married and died there in 1972.
This research belongs to a friend so I am only passing on what they tell me.
Hope this clears up the misunderstanding!

Hello Anthony
I see you are on line right now.
I was wondering if you got my reply, to your information last week I cannot remember the day and as I don't get a copy of this.

I see that it does not appear on this site so where I put it I have no idea.  All of this is new to me.

So.....THANKS  for your help.  Irish records are very hard to come by.  My great grandfather was born in Shandon Cork circa 1800 by name of Richard Seymour and he joined the Irish/English Army aged just 18 and travelled all around England Ireland and then came to Australia on a soldier on a ship guarding convicts one of which he married later on.

Are you in Ireland?

Hope this reaches you this time.

Lesley
